Garnets

Feb 25, 2010

Garnets I just love garnets, the color, it must be the color.  That deep reddish-burgundy hue.  I am just drawn to them.  I though i would jot down some facts and share them with everyone.

The garnet has been a popular gem throughout history. Garnets were found as beads in a necklace worn by a young man in a grave that dates back to 3000 B.C. This is proof of the hardness and durability of the stone.

As for color saturated dark red is first what comes to mind if garnet color is considered. The trend is shifting. A demantoid with its emerald green color is today's most valuable garnet. That applies as well for the emerald green tsavorite, whose quality can reach flawlessness.

Garnets were highly popular in Europe, in 18th and 19th centuries. They were frequently used for jewelry in the Victorian times. In Old Spain, the pomegranate was a favorite, and as a result of this, so was the garnet. The name “garnet” comes from the Latin word “Garanatus,” meaning “seedlike,” in reference to a pomegranate. In Spanish astrology, the garnet once represented the sun.

Garnet is the birthstone for January and the stone that celebrates the 2nd anniversary of marriage.

Dumortierite Stones

Aug 09, 2009
Picture_012
I really like these stones and thought I would share some facts about them!

Dumortierite was named in 1881 after Eugene Dumortier, a French paleontologist who found this mineral in the Rhone-Alps region of France.

The mineral is usually blue or violet, but can also be brown or pink. Because of its color, the stone can be confused with Lapis Lazuli, Azurite, Blue Quartz, and Sodalite.

Deposits can be found in a number of different places around the world, such as the United States (Nevada, Arizona, and San Diego County, California), France, Brazil, Italy, Austria, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, and Namibia.

Dumortierite Metaphysical Properties

This lovely blue stone is said to help relieve stomach problems and nausea, and to help with tension-related ailments such as headaches.

Dumortierite is said to promote mental clarity and enhance learning ability.  It is said to help stimulate organizational skills, helping people clear out clutter. As part of the enhancement of mental clarity, the stone is said to help clear both writer’s and artist’s block.

Waiting for August

Jul 21, 2009
Imagesnew
Here we are in the last weeks of July and the temperature is about 55* yes its cold, but it is normal for this part of California (Eureka, CA) the beautiful Redwood Forests thrive in this environment.  I guess this cloudy misty day has set the tone for the blues.  I have lived here about 12 years now and still have not gotten used to waring a jacket to the beach in the dead of summer.

My creative endeavors have come to a halt due to the fact that I am in the middle of moving house (all my stuff in storage :( ).  The home I was renting has been sold!  So, here I am camping out at my sisters house while trying to find a suitable place to live.  It can be a little frustrating when your creative energy is blocked by circumstances beyond your control so, I decided to work on a new banner!  I would love to hear what you all think of it.

Hopefully, August will find me in my new place and I can create some new pieces to display in my shop!
